Burnt Hickory Brewery Scott Hedeen

Burnt Hickory Brewery’s Scott Hedeen is part idea man, part madman

I first met Scott Hedeen when Burnt Hickory Brewery was just a few months old.  Over the years he has become one of my very favorite people in the whole world.  He’s also very high on the list of people that drive me crazy.  It’s a weird relationship, but it works.

Hedeen is an idea man, he is constantly thinking (and talking) about what’s next.  For him, for others, for everything.  The wheels are constantly spinning.  This makes for some great conversations, amazingly creative ideas, and a 5-minute phone call about hops turning into a 50-minute phone call about IPA, playing the theremin, 80s punk, and standup comedy.

Hedeen founded his brewery in 2011 and produced his first commercial batch in April 2012.  Back then, his Wonka World of craft beer only opened to the public one Saturday each month.  Initially, 20-30 dedicated fans showed up for the tastings but it wasn’t long before they numbered in the hundreds.  BHB’s fans weren’t just normal beer lovers, they felt connected to the brewery and the beer, they were passionate about it.  Those who didn’t “get” what Burnt Hickory was about went as far as calling their fans a cult.  That’s not far from the truth.

This week, Hedeen and Burnt Hickory taproom manager Heddy Proctor join us to talk about their adventure.  We talk a little bit about their brewery and growth, a lot about music, why it’s important for breweries to support homebrewers, and several other topics that I was not able to keep up with.  Scott has something to say about everything, and we tried to catch as much of it as we could.

This is Burnt Hickory Brewery’s third appearance on Beer Guys Radio.  They also joined us on Ep. 13 in March 2016 and Ep. 56 in Jan. 2017.
