Independent Distilling Bierschnapps

You may remember way back in 2015 when Independent Distilling and Three Taverns mentioned they were collaborating to bring Georgia’s first Bierschnapps to market.  It was originally slated for a late 2015 release but the spirit decided that wasn’t going to work, and IDC had to wait for it to be ready, and now it is.

What the heck is Bierschnapps?

Pretty simple, actually, Bierschnapps is distilled beer.  This collaboration came to fruition when Three Taverns had remaining kegs of their Feest Noel holiday beer remaining from 2014 and Brewmaster Joran Van Ginderachter sent an email to IDC’s Michael Anderson to see if he had an interest in distilling some.  They got together in February 2015 and made it happen, turning about 240 gallons of beer into a single barrel of spirits dubbed Outlier #3.

“Community is a big part of my life and was a catalyst for me in my exploration of beer. It’s something I wanted Three Taverns to be about since day 1 and what makes projects like this so meaningful to me,” said Brian Purcell Founder & CEO Three Taverns Craft Brewery. “We love what Independent Distilling is doing and to be able to work with them as neighbors and friends, and create something new, is really special.”

Anderson used his 100-gallon copper pot still to transform the brew into an amazing distilled spirit, the first of its kind in Georgia.  IDC Says it presents, “Herbal vanilla notes that evolve on the palate into cinnamon, cardamom, and mace that are beautifully balanced with oak, the finish is long with a subtle spice and a hint of wood.”

“Being small allows us the opportunity to do these types of one-offs and collaborative experiments and give people something they’ve never had before” said Anderson. “In this case, a simple question from the other side of the parking lot has resulted in a truly exceptional spirit that I think people are going to be blown away by.”
