If you are like us, and enjoy a great-tasting, authentic Kölsch beer then we have one to recommend for you. Kölsch from Conway, NH-based Tuckerman Brewing Company is as true to style as you can get without being brewed in Germany.

Authentic Ingredients

“Everything we put into this beer is sourced from Germany, with the exception of the water of course,” said Matt Cowley, Marketing Manager for Tuckerman Brewing Company. Weyermann Pilsner malt and German ale yeast are used and fermented at cooler temperatures. Matt notes that they still make beers that are “in” right now, but the backbone of Tuckerman has always been Pale Ales and authentic German-style beers. “It’s a niche market, but we pride ourselves on doing it right,” said Matt.

What makes a beer like this stand out is the use of directly sourced ingredients from Germany. This creates an incredible, high-quality beer that is sure to please even the pickiest of palates. The authentic ingredients will get you close to where you need to be, but a passionate brewing team will take it over the top!

Unpacking What’s Inside

That’s what we’re really here for, how does Kölsch taste? Honestly, it’s thoroughly enjoyable!

The Kölsch is a style that doesn’t get a lot of love. Yeah, it’s not as flashy or might not be as fun as a Triple Chocolate Lava Cake Stout. However, it’s a dang good drinking beer. One that you can sip on, relax, enjoy the style, and have a few without worrying about overdoing it.

We find this beer to be light and crisp with a delicate balance of maltiness and hop bitterness. It has a clean, slightly fruity flavor with a hint of sweetness. Kölsch is very refreshing and easy to enjoy anywhere, or any time of year. However, we can picture this beer hitting just right when the warmer weather starts to creep in. The light body and crispness will pair very well with sunlight, friends and warm air.

Kölsch comes in at 4.9% ABV so it’s not technically a heavy hitter. That’s the beauty of this style though, light on ABV, but just the right amount of flavor.

A Decade of Kölsch

Tuckerman has been brewing Kölsch for over ten years now. “We could call the Kölsch a flagship beer because we’ve been making it for over ten years now and it’s available year-round,” said Matt.

By definition, to be a true Kölsch, the beer has to be made in Cologne, Germany. Obviously, this beer isn’t, but Tuckerman keeps it true to the original by using those previously talked about bohemian Pilsner malts sourced from Germany, and other ingredients based on the original iconic recipe.

While Tuckerman Brewing Company may be a few thousand miles away from Cologne, the taste of their Kölsch is remarkably close! It’s the care and compassion from the team at Tuckerman, along with their ingredients sourced from Germany that put this beer over the top for us. We always enjoy this style of beer, but this one is near the top for us.

Don’t just take our word for it though, if you find yourself in Conway, NH or near it, you should definitely stop in and see them. Give their Kölsch a try and sample many of their other offerings, you won’t be disappointed!
