Georgia Senate Bill 152 aims to improve regulations for breweries and distilleries

UPDATE 03/08/19 | Unfortunate news out of the Gold Dome.  SB 152 stalled in the Senate and did not cross over.

There’s a new Beer Bill in Georgia that aims to improve on the changes of the last few years for the state’s breweries and distilleries.  Senate Bill 152 has been introduced by Senators Albers (R-56) and Hufstetler (R-52).  SB152 would remove the daily sales cap at breweries and distilleries, currently at 288 oz. for beer (One case of 24x 12 oz. cans/bottles) and 2,250ml for distilled spirits (3x 750ml bottles).  Passage of the bill would also adjust the distribution cap for brewpubs from 5,000 barrels annually to 10,000 barrels annually.  Finally, SB152 would reduce the requirement for breweries to produce 100% of the beer they serve on-site to 50%.  With the growth of breweries with second locations across Georgia, this would allow brewers to transfer product between each brewery location.

Georgia SB 152 – Summary

  • Eliminates the per person per day to go cap for breweries and distilleries (Buy a keg at the brewery!)
  • Reduces the requirement that breweries must produce 100% of the beer they sell on-site at that location to requiring 50% to be brewed on site (Transfer beer between brewery locations.)
  • Allows brewpubs to distribute up to 10,000 barrels annually (up from 5,000)

We’ll continue following the progress of this bill and update this post as new information becomes available.

Other alcohol-related bills

  • SB 146 has also been presented to allow beer, wine and liquor tasting at liquor stores.  Currently, tasting may only be held at beer and wine stores.
  • HB 76 would allow counties and municipalities to regulate alcohol licenses in respect to certain distances (such as distance from a school) in a manner that is less but not more restrictive than those distances specified by the state.
