Terrapin and Fox Brothers Team Up for restaurant, microbrewery at Braves Stadium

Beer, Baseball and Barbecue. What’s more American than that?
Not much, if you ask me.
The new home for the Atlanta Braves is going up in Cobb County. It will not only feature the ballpark, but also a shopping and dining space called the Battery Atlanta.
Some of the Atlanta stalwart restaurants that are planned for the Battery are Antico Pizza, Ford Fry’s Superica, and the iconic BBQ joint Fox Brothers.
Joining Fox Brothers in their venture? Terrapin Beer Company. The “Terrapin Taproom” will be operated by Delaware North and will feature a rotating selection of their core and seasonal beers.
The really exciting thing for Terrapin Co-founder “Spike” Buckowski and his team, however, will be next door. The ATL Brew Lab will be a Terrapin-run microbrewery and pilot system, something the Athens-based brewery has never had.
The taproom and brew lab will be located outside the park, and will be open year-round.
“We wanted to partner with Terrapin because they’ve been crafting beers right up the road in Athens and have developed a strong southern following, so we knew right away they would be a natural fit with the Braves,” said Derek Schiller, Braves president, business. “The Terrapin Taproom will pair Terrapin’s freshest and newest beers with some down-home southern barbecue, which is sure to excite all of Braves Country.”
Spike and representatives from the Atlanta Braves were on hand at Fox Brothers to make the announcement at a press event on Monday.
We talked to Spike about this new venture. Read the full press release here.
(update #2)
But wait a minute, Beer Guys Radio…. in Georgia, you have to have a specific license to run a brewpub. Do they have one?
Great question, and we emailed Spike for an answer.
The Terrapin Taproom with Fox Brothers will be a restaurant that will feature all Terrapin beers. It will run separately from the ATL Brew Lab.
But get this. In order to sell beers on tap at the ATL Brew Lab, Terrapin will have to:
- Brew the beer on site.
- Give the kegs to a distributor.
- The distributor will (presumably) put the kegs in a truck, drive around the block, and then return the kegs to the ATL brew lab.
Even if Terrapin wanted to open a brewpub, they are not permitted to do so by current Georgia law. Yes, it’s ILLEGAL for a brewery to have the audacity to actually open up a place that would serve food. Wrap your head around that one for a little while.
Why? Because Georgia is a great place to be in the beer business. Or something like that.
