Tonsmeire talks the semantics of sour beer, collaboration brews, and why he hasn’t started his own brewery
This interview is a sneak preview of On Tap with the Beer Guys! Scroll to the bottom of this post for more info.
If you’re a homebrewer you’ve likely heard of Michael Tonsmeire. You may know him as ‘The Mad Fermentationist‘, or if you’re on Reddit’s r/homebrewing forum you’ll know him as the user ‘oldsock’. Tonsmeire is well-traveled in brewing circles and is always willing to share his knowledge via his website, on Reddit, or via email.
In addition to his online presence Michael is also the author of American Sour Beers. He’s consulted and collaborated with dozens of America’s best craft breweries (including Modern Times Beer Co.), and is a frequent speaker at homebrewing conferences both in the US and internationally. Michael’s latest collaboration beers released Labor Day weekend, Hippolyta and Penthesilia are a pair of Oud Bruins brewed with Commonwealth Brewing Co. – you can check with the brewery to see if any bottles lasted through the weekend.
What’s this about a sneak preview?
Our fans have made it clear that they appreciate the local focus of the Beer Guys Radio show, and we do to. Outside of “Omigod you guys are so awesome!”, the two things we hear the most are that you’d like to hear more about brewers/breweries outside of the Southeast, and you’d like to hear more homebrewing content. We hear ya.
In mid-October 2016 we’ll launch On Tap with the Beer Guys, a bi-weekly podcast about the people, places, and things that make craft beer awesome across the US and around the world. Each episode will run a commute/workout-friendly 25 to 30 minutes. We have an AMAZING line-up of guests for our launch episodes and we are very excited to get this show kicked off. We’re working on the homebrewing info as well… but just hold your pants on, this stuff takes time.
We hope you enjoy this chat with Michael Tonsmeire and please let us know what you’d like to hear on the new show. Cheers!
