Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, bar none.

As a dad, I love watching my kids at Christmas and Halloween. But Thanksgiving? That’s my time. Eating and watching football? Sign me up.

It’s also the perfect holiday to pick out, share, and enjoy some of your favorite craft beers. But it’s important to do it smartly.

Starter

Terrapin Recreation Ale. This American Pale Ale from the great Athens brewery is how I plan on starting my day. At 4.7%, it’s not going to get me schnockered early on. And that’s important, since it’s my job to fry the turkey. Starting out with a dubbel or a DIPA, and I would likely wind up like this guy.

Turkey time

I’ll take the Orpehus Atalanta. I’m going to bring this to the party to try and change some minds. Not only will this tart plum saison complement the turkey nicely, and cut the heaviness of the mashed potatoes and gravy, the fruitiness of this beer is a nice shift from the cranberry sauce.

Football Time

For my friends who happen to be Philadelphia Eagles fans, they may want to skip the beer and go straight to the Jaeger bombs, but since my team isn’t playing Thursday, I want to enjoy the game.

If your beer fridge looks like this, please invite me over.

Since I’m a hophead (and so is my dad), I’d usually want to break out a Burnt Hickory Cannon Dragger or an Orpheus Transmigration of Souls. But with those at 8% and 10% respectively, I’m going to back off. I’d say I’ll bring Creature Comforts Tropicalia, my current favorite Georgia beer. But then again, it seems to be everyone’s favorite, so if you have some, please feel free to invite me over. So I’ll go with the can of Terrapin’s So Fresh and So Green, Green 2015 Equinox I’ve stored in my fridge. At 6.6%, it’s not going to knock my socks off, but it’s a nice, clean beer for me.

Dessert

Now it’s time to break out the big guns. Grandma’s pecan pie is super sweet, so I’m going to need something to overcome that. I’m going to go with Wild Heaven’s Eschaton. The quad has that great dark fruity taste, balanced with the malt.

Rest, relax, and go back for seconds!

I have relatives who aren’t into craft beer. I just haven’t been able to break through…yet. So, in order to break them from their pale yellow macro mold, I’m going to get them to try….

Red Brick Laughing Skull Amber Ale. Very approachable and malty enough to appeal to a lot of people. A great entry-level beer.

Three Taverns Prince of Pilsen. This is a great upgrade to the pilsners we all know and love. If my macro-loving kin don’t appreciate this one, I’m declaring them a lost cause.

Tim will be weighing in with his choices soon, and I can’t wait to see what he’s thinking about drinking this upcoming turkey day. I’d love to hear your thoughts too!

Enjoy the holiday, #drinklocal, and drink #GABeer  – especially if you’re heading ot of state. It’s the perfect holiday to share our state’s great beers with people who may not get to enjoy them all the time.
