Sceptre Brewing Arts

Sceptre Brewing Arts coming soon to Decatur, GA

Decatur is one of Atlanta’s more craft beery suburbs.  Three Taverns Brewery, Twain’s Brewpub, and the world-class Brick Store Pub already call Decatur home.  Soon, the Oakhurst neighborhood will welcome Sceptre Brewing Arts to the family.

Sceptre’s got an interesting origin story.  The owners (the same team behind beer bar Argosy) bought the remnants of the short-lived Oak Brewpub.  When most brewers open a new brewery they get to pick equipment to suit their needs and brewing style.  In this case brewmaster Trevor Jones had his ready to go, and there are pros and cons to that.  Sceptre’s From the Ashes ICA (that’s India Cream Ale) eludes to what he had to work with.

Sceptre Brewing Arts - Trevor Jones
Sceptre brewmaster Trevor Jones is bringing his A-game to Oakhurst.

As far as working with ashes goes, Jones comes across as a master.  Every beer we sampled was fantastic, a feat not many breweries pull off out of the gate.  Some of our very favorite breweries started off with acceptable beer and built up to excellence, but Sceptre is coming out swinging.  The aforementioned From the Ashes is an easy-drinker with a nice burst of flavor from the Loral lupulin powder used as a dry hop addition and Sun Medallion Table Beer is surprisingly delicious for a beer at only 3.5%.  For the hop heads, they had a trio of DDH masterpieces with Laughing Falcon Pale Ale, Chaos Magician IPA, and Smile Grenade DIPA.  Jones has also cultured his own yeast and presented two beers to showcase the blend.  Grottoes has a light tartness and funky-earthy character, a great intro to Wild Ales, and Friend of the Fool bangs out big, fresh Georgia peach flavor with a slightly more tart base.

Sceptre Brewing Arts - Food
A very small sampling of some of the tasty offerings at Sceptre.

Culinary director Michael Person brings bites that stand hand-in-hand with the quality of Jones’s beers.  Smoked trout dip, jerk chicken lollipops with creamy chimichurri, veggie sliders built on a Beyond burger base, and arepas were a few of the dishes we sampled.  For the purists, they also have a very solid burger and fries, which co-owner Armando Celentano recommends dipping in their beer cheese sauce.

If you can bank on first impressions then Sceptre Brewing Arts is going to kill it.  They’re targeting to open “soon after Father’s Day” but haven’t set a solid date just yet.  With half-a-dozen-or-so other highly-anticipated spots also getting very close to opening Georgia is soon to cross 100 breweries and brewpubs in the state.  Plan accordingly.
