Cherry Street Brewing Co-op and Wicked Weed Buyout – Episode 71
2017 had been fairly quiet when it came to big beer buyouts.
Not anymore. North Carolina’s Wicked Weed Brewing became the lastest brewery to take AB InBev’s money, selling to the world’s largest brewer. As you can expect, it was greeted with a lot of scorn and derision in the news and on the socials. We talk about the impact of “selling out” and the consequences for Wicked Weed.
But at least we had great beer and company to lament this news. Cherry Street Brewing Cooperative just celebrated its anniversary, so we headed up to Cumming to talk to Owner Nick Tanner and his crew. With the recent expansion of their tap room and brewhouse, they are boosting production. You may have even seen some of their bottles in stores (cans are also coming soon!) We talked about the growth of Cherry Street and North Fulton/Forsyth as a beer destination. We also discussed the issue of “selling out” and more.
Oh yeah, we also had some amazing beers….
Truck and Tap‘s Beers of the Week:
- Among others, we tried the following Cherry Street brews:
- Steppin’ Razor IPA (and yes, it’s juicy)
- Coconut Porter (formerly Chief Sawnee’s Stash)
- Triple Chocolate Chunk (A collaboration with the Lincoln Fill Station)
- Groovy Child Guava Ale (try saying that five times fast)
Headlines (brought to you by Your Pie Perimeter)
- The collective reaction to the Wicked Weed news? About what you’d expect.
- Many bars are cutting ties with Wicked Weed.
- Creature Comforts, Three Taverns and several more craft brewers pull out of Wicked Weed’s Funkatorium Invitational festival.
- Creature Comforts CEO Chris Herron on the acquisition of craft beer brands by big beer
- Wicked Weed owners “moving forward” despite backlash.
- Charlotte Observer columnist explains why he will never buy Wicked Weed again.
- On the heels of the Wicked Weed announcement, California’s Lagunitas announced it was fully acquired by Heineken.
Coming up next week? Hopefully we won’t be talking about more buyouts. We will be talking more about growing brewpubs however. This time with Atlanta’s Torched Hop. Have a great week, and DRINK LOCAL.
