E9 Brewing Company | T-Dome Pils
The Tacoma Dome is an indoor multi-purpose arena located in Tacoma, Washington. It is by far the largest and most recognizable landmark in Tacoma. It’s quite an impressive building, surrounded by beautiful forestry with an amazing view of Commencement Bay, and Mt. Ranier on the other side. If those things don’t pique your interest, then you’ll be happy to know there’s an incredible craft brewery waiting for you just a few blocks away.
Historic Beer
We’re talking about the historic E9 Brewing Company, which is less than a five-minute drive away, or a 20-minute walk if you want to enjoy the nature around you. The historic significance related to E9 is the fact that they were the first-ever craft brewery to open in Tacoma.
E9 is located in a building that was originally the Tacoma Radiator and Fender Works company in the late 1950s. Plans were carefully laid out and an investment was made to build the state-of-the-art brewing facility. This wasn’t the original location of the brewery though. We have to travel back in time a few years to learn even more history about E9 Brewing.
Their original location that was purchased was Tacoma’s last horse-drawn firehouse! The co-owners saved the building from demolition in the late 1960s. Their dream was to turn the beautiful building from 1907 into a neighborhood tavern. Their dream became a reality in 1972 and served the community for many years. Nowadays, it’s no longer a brewery, but the building still stands, and it’s listed on the National Historic Registry. Later on, the city of Tacoma created a Brewery District in downtown Tacoma, that paired with the increasing demand for E9 beer led the team to make the decision to purchase the building they are in today.
The Beer
T-Dome Pils is roughly 96% Weyermann Pilsner malt, with a few percent of Weyermann Munich malt. “We keep it true to the German Pilsner style by using the best malt from German grown hops,” said Donovan Stewart, the Sales Marketing Manager from E9. Stewart noted that Weyermann Pilsner is a great base malt for many styles. However, it’s perfect for Pilsner style Lagers with a light color, slight malty sweetness and a little touch of honey notes.
“The hallmarks of this style are a combination of straw pale color and that light malt sweetness from the Pilsner malt, fairly low bitterness and a somewhat snappy hop characteristic,” said Stewart. Hallertau and Spalt hops are added during the boil, and then it’s lagered for 6 weeks, then filtered to create a bright and crisp flavor.
We are very fond of this classic Pilsner beer! It drinks true to style, and it is a beer you can have just about any time of the day, but especially after a long day and you just want something to drink a few of. It’s very clean and finishes with a slight hop bitterness at the end. Often times it’s hard to differentiate beers of the same style, especially with a Pilsner. There’s just something that stands out with T-Dome that makes it a little extra special. We’re thankful that breweries like E9 focus on the intricate details to make a common beer not so common, at least not to us.
At the end of the day, it’s about what you, the craft beer drinker, like to enjoy. Sometimes it depends on what mood you are in, or perhaps what you are having for a meal. Whatever your taste buds are looking for, we feel that you would truly enjoy this expertly crafted Pilsner from E9 Brewing Co. You don’t have to wait for cooler weather or warmer weather even, you can enjoy it no matter what time of year it is.
