Three Taverns nears completion of brewery expansion
Three Taverns has quickly solidified their spot as one of Georgia’s favorite breweries. With staple favorites like A Night on Ponce IPA and rare, limited releases like Helm’s Deep bourbon-barrel aged Imperial Stout and their American wild ales Inceptus and Fortunatus Three Taverns has shown they can brew amazing beers across a range of styles. The brewery also features experimental and one-off beers from their Hop Leaf and Sour Asylum projects, where the popular Rapturous lacto-soured raspberry ale was born. With popular beers and a variety of styles demand for their brews continues to grow.
Closing in on their four-year anniversary, Three Taverns is nearing the final stages of construction on its second brewery expansion in less than two years. A freshly poured 77’ x 28’ sloped brewery floor will initially accommodate three new 120 barrel tanks scheduled for delivery next week. This will increase the brewery’s annual production capacity from 9,000 to 16,000 barrels. As the brewery continues to grow the new space will be able to accommodate an additional 15 tanks allowing for over 35,000 barrels of annual beer production.
“One of the really exciting parts of our expansion is the capability of our existing brewery to handle it. Originally when we built out the brewery we only occupied half of the building we’re in. We knew that the second half of the building, which we eventually took over, would accommodate significant growth in storage and fermentation space with the added square footage and 24’ ceiling height. And with our sales volume now pushing production to full capacity, these new tanks are critical to continuing our growth of existing brands and freeing us to add new volume brands to our portfolio.” said founder Brian Purcell.
More time for experimental and one-off beers
This new expansion in capacity will open up more time for new experimental and one-off beers on Three Taverns new pilot system, Genesis II. The brand new 1.5 barrel brew system will become the launching pad for new beers and allow the brewers to experiment in ways like never before.
Purcell muses “Our new pilot system is another exciting addition to our brewery. In 2015, we started the Imaginarium Project brewing experimental beers on my old home brew system, known as Genesis, and served these extremely limited beers in The Parlour [3T’s tasting room]. Our newly installed pilot system and new 3 barrel fermenters will allow us to produce larger batches, both for testing out more frequently in The Parlour, and for sending in limited quantity to the market.
And with the new law allowing direct beer sales staring Sept. 1, expect to see even more Imaginarium Projects, more Hop-Leaf Projects, more Sour Asylum Series and more of who knows what else when you come to visit The Parlour.”
