Georgia breweries come together to help Baton Rouge schools affected by flooding
Pints & Pencils brings five Georgia breweries together to support Louisiana schools
On August 13th and 14th Louisiana was hit my massive rainstorms and catastrophic flooding. Baton Rouge schools had resumed classes just a few days earlier and the flooding destroyed classrooms and daily supplies, as well as libraries full of books. Cullen Boudreaux has recently moved to Baton Rouge from Atlanta. In Georgia, she worked for Wild Heaven Craft Beers and was very involved in the local craft beer scene. Cullen tells us, “Several of my friends lost everything. Reaching out to my beer community in ATL seemed like a good way to help.” The ATL beer community agreed and five local breweries have signed up for the Pints & Pencils drive.
What is Pints & Pencils?
From the event page:
In times of trauma, books and art help children escape their devastated surroundings by allowing them to dive into imaginary worlds. Pints and Pencils is your opportunity to help Baton Rouge children rebuild these worlds. The Pints and Pencils collection drive is focused on library books and art supplies. Drop-off locations include breweries all around metro Atlanta. Stop by to deliver much-needed items, and then stay to enjoy a beer.
Cullen and I traded chatted some about why this event is important to her. She shared the story of laying in bed reading a book and listening to the thunder and lightning as the rain started, she said it was like nothing she’d experienced before, and we get some pretty serious storms here in Atlanta. When the storms finally stopped Baton Rouge had received 3x more rain than New Orleans did during Hurricane Katrina. The waters continued to rise and engulf homes, subdivisions, shopping centers, animal shelters… and schools.
After seeing a picture her friend shared of her children’s flooded elementary school library, Cullen recalled how the community in Atlanta had been very generous when she held a similar drive for United Methodist Children’s Home in Avondale Estates. She chose libraries and art departments as they are often under-funded and overlooked in the frequent requests for basic school supplies, and the Pints & Pencils program was born.
