The famous Creature Comforts Tropicália is up today.

Creature Comforts opened in 2014. Almost immediately, the Athens-Georgia based brewery’s beers became incredibly popular. Here in Georgia, their releases are almost always anticipated by the beer geeks…err…community.

Note: We talked to the guys behind Creature Comforts in an earlier Beer Guys Radio Show.

IPA is one of the most popular styles of American craft beer. Almost every brewery in the country makes one. So it’s no surprise there’s been a lot of experimentation and development in the style. Add into the fact there are so many different hop varieties nowadays, the differences and subtleties are amazing.

I make no effort in hiding the fact that I’m a hophead. A beer can’t get pine-y enough for me. This would be generally termed a West Coast-style IPA. This is probably what most people think of as an IPA – hops, hops and more hops. Piney, hop forward….you know what I’m talking about. You can smell it, you can taste it, you can feel it.

However, over the years, many brewers have been experimenting with different types of hops and yeast strains and how to best mingle them. They’re creating what’s loosely termed an “East Coast” or “Northeast” IPA.

I know I’m simplifying here, but bear with me. This style of IPA is fruitier, juicier, and citrusier…if that’s really a word. We’re talking about beers like Alchemist‘s Heady Topper or Lunch by Maine Beer Company. They may even use citrus fruits to help boost the amount of…well…fruitiness to the beer. Ballast Point‘s Grapefruit Sculpin, or Burnt Hickory‘s Didjits are two good examples.

But back to Tropicália….

You don’t need me to tell you how great this beer is. As you can see by the Beer Advocate and Rate Beer ratings above, people smarter than me have rated this as one of the best IPAs in the country.

But here’s the deal. Like we talked about earlier Tropicália, it’s in the more modern trend of fruity, juicy, IPAs with the bitterness lingering behind and the aroma/flavor more to the front. If you’re a craft beer fan, this will be a nice treat.

But I know you’ve got one of those friends. The people who say they don’t like IPAs because they’re “too bitter” Maybe they’ve even balked at a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Maybe that’s you. Do yourself a favor and get this one in front of you. I bet it will change your mind.

In short, get Tropicália. Anyone who is a fan of craft beer needs to have this once. If you’re not in the distribution area, trade for it. The problem is finding it. As of this writing, it’s incredibly difficult to find – and when it comes out, it sells out quickly. Do yourself a favor – if you see this in your bottle shop, grab it. If you see it at your growler store, grab it. You’ll need to act fast.

Also, if you happen to find it, (good luck), you must try Creature Comforts Cosmik Debris double IPA. This is everything an IPA should be, and there’s a reason why it’s almost impossible to find.

Note – if you happen to be hankering for a juicy IPA like Tropicália and you just can’t find it, check out Cigar City‘s Jai Alai IPA.
