Terrapin Watermelon Gose

Terrapin Watermelon Gose Beer Review

Gose is a traditional German style of wheat beer originating in the middle ages.  It’s known for a light sourness and brewed with salt and coriander.  The style mostly disappeared by the mid 1960s but was brought back to life in the 1980s and has seen increasing popularity in America over the last few years.  A lot of people struggle with the pronunciation, it’s Goes-uh, just like it says on the can.  Not to be confused with Geuze, which is an entirely different style of beer and pronunciation, gooz in French or ger-zu in Dutch.  If you’re a native English speaker you probably won’t get it right even with your best efforts.  Joran from Three Taverns Brewery (Joran is one of only three Belgian brewers in America) tried to help me say Geuze properly in Dutch.  He said ger-zu, I said ger-zu, he shook his head and said ger-zu again.  We did this a few more times then gave up and drank some beer.

Now that we’re all fluent in the international language of beer let’s talk about this one.  Terrapin Watermelon Gose was recently released and it’s been a hot commodity.  The beer pours crystal clear, which is uncharacteristic of the style but does make for an attractive pour.  The head is full and light with a slight linger.  Aroma is lightly briny with a hint of watermelon, reminiscent more of where the white rind meets the flesh than straight-up watermelon flesh.  I didn’t get any tartness on the aroma.  First sips mimicked what I got in the aroma with light saltiness and a hint of the watermelon-meets-rind on the finish.  Tartness is very light, one of the lightest of any Gose I’ve tried, but also very clean.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it’s still very refreshing and would make for a good introduction to sour beers.  As I continued sipping and the beer warmed slightly the taste remained pretty consistent, a bit more watermelon did start to creep out in the aroma.  I’ve seen others comment online that this beer was too sweet, I didn’t get that at all.

Final verdict.  Terrapin Watermelon Gose is very light on both the tartness and the saltiness, which can be a good thing if you’re just discovering the style.  Watermelon was also light and, as mentioned above, reminded me of the part of the watermelon where the flesh meets the white rind.  The beer is amazingly refreshing and you could easily pop one of these after mowing the lawn and quench your thirst.  For my personal tastes I’d like to see more tartness and watermelon, but I still enjoyed the beer.
