Beer In-Depth: Terrapin Liquid Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter

OK, so here’s the deal: I don’t do “reviews.”

For the simple fact that taste is subjective, and I don’t want you to miss out on something you may really enjoy that I didn’t. So, I’ll lay out the facts, give you my thoughts, and you make the decision.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at….

Porters, in case you were wondering, are a pretty old style of beer. They were developed in England in the 1700s, and are a close cousin (brother? sister?) of stouts. They get their dark color from the brown malt. It’s been said that porters are called that because it’s the style of beer preferred by river porters. And who am I to doubt Wikipedia anyway?

Porters started slowly declining in popularity (and strength) during the war period, and in fact production ceased in the early 1950s. Porters were revived in the 70s, and craft beer makers are going crazy for them using them as a base for some experimental styles.

Which brings us back to our beer. Terrapin Liquid Bliss was initially released as part of the Athens, Ga. brewery’s “side projects” one-offs back in 2012. In the summer of 2014, it was upgraded to year-round status. It’s actually the only porter/stout that Terrapin has in their year-round release.

So it’s been a little while, but that’s not a bad thing – you can find this one pretty easily. In fact, I found mine at a local grocery store.

I know what you’re thinking. When you see “Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter,” you’re expecting a gimmick. One of those in-your-face beers that overpowers you with flavor. Give this one a try though.

THE POUR

Dark brown, darker head with some nice lacing.

THE TASTE

First, do yourself a favor, when you pull this from the fridge and pour it in your glass…wait. It’ll be around 37-38 degrees. Which is actually about 10-15 degrees too cold for serving a porter.

Now, before you throw your mobile viewing device or call me some affected beer snob, let me explain. Yeah, I thought it was a little pretentious at first. But when I had my first Liquid Bliss, I didn’t do that. And I really didn’t get any chocolate peanut butter on the nose or tasted anything at all. It just tasted like a porter.

But I let this one sit for a while. And when you do that, the flavors and aromas really come out. But I want to emphasize this isn’t like drinking a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. The flavors are more subtle. More salty-sweet than sugary sweet.

Personally, I’m getting a lot more peanut from this than I am chocolate. Your tastes may vary. Otherwise, it’s a solid chocolate stout.

There are some chocolate peanut butter beers out there that sock you in the gut. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But this one doesn’t do that. So if you’re looking for a candy bar, you may want to go elsewhere. But if you’re looking for a solid chocolate porter with a little bit of a twist, then you just may have found your liquid bliss.
