I’ve had many great nights with friends shared with bottles of Three Philosophers, so let’s go with that.
I really enjoyed Hoegaarden when I tried it last year. Really great light, wheat beer. But all Belgian beers are amazing!
The arguably best belgian beer was my first: Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue). This was in 1990 during a trip to Europe–we had just landed in Brussels and my college roommate took us to the Grand Place for beers and suggested I try the Chimay, as he knew I liked “big” things. OMG. My palette woke up, my mind expanded, and I’ve never looked back. I became so associated with Belgian beers and beer festivals for a few years that my friends started calling me ChiMark!
Cantillon Kriek is my favorite! Nice tartness, cherry flavor, and a tad oaky.
Congrats on winning a pair of tickets, Bonnie! Hope you enjoy the event!
You always seem to remember your first, and mine was Ommegang Rouge. A Flanders Red that is no longer produced. I can still see myself sitting at the bar at Summits in Woodstock (when there was Summits in Woodstock) 7 years or so ago. Wow never had anything like it. The cherry tart, light funkiness. Every Flanders or sour I have now is compared to it. Wish they would bring it back.
The best Belgian beers I’ve had were the ones while in Bruges- especially the ones at Poatersgat- ” the monk’s hole”- in the basement of a 19th century church!
Westy 12, yes a cliche but it is incredible, especially at the brewery.
2 that left lasting impressions: Chimay Dorée cause it was darn tasty and very hard to come by; and the Straffe Hendrik Quad which was the first quad style to change my ordering habits
I think one of the best Belgian beers I have ever had is Duchesse de Bourgogne. The tart fruitiness mixed with a balsamic vinaigrette finish was one of the most interesting combination of flavors I have ever experienced. It opened up my mind and palate to the world of sour beers and I never looked back.
Gotta go with Cantillon. They’re masters of the art of blending lambics and can’t be matched. Cheers!
