New Georgia Breweries 2018

Georgia Brewery Growth

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE UPDATED 2019 EDITION

Georgia breweries are booming.  The passage of SB63 (allowing to go “souvenirs”) in 2015 spurred a wave of new breweries and the passage of SB85 in 2017 (allowing direct sales at breweries) strengthened that growth.  We saw a 28.9% increase in the number of breweries and brewpubs in the state from 2016, and a whopping 70.4% increase in just two years.

With the revised laws, it is much more feasible for a very small brewery to open here.  The ability to sell directly at the taproom means a small brewery can be financially viable by keeping more of their money in-house.   On the opposite end of the spectrum, a brewery can open as a “production brewery” with a restaurant, giving visitors the feel of a brewpub but allowing for higher production and distribution levels for the brewer.  The recently opened New Realm Brewing Co. operates under this model.

Several breweries are already slated to open in 2018, and I’m sure we’ll see even more added to the list as the year goes on.  It’s a great time to be a craft beer fan in Georgia.

  • As of Dec. 31, 2017 there were 48 production breweries and 27 brewpubs operating in Georgia, plus 5 cideries and 4 meaderies (Does not include contract/gypsy breweries.)
  • 2017 | 13 new breweries and 10 new brewpubs opened (38.9% growth from 2016)
  • 2016 | 7 new breweries and 3 new brewpubs opened (22.7% growth from 2015)

New Georgia Breweries Planned for 2018

This list is ever-changing.  Breweries will be added and moved around here as needed and we’ll update with relevant info throughout the year.

Athentic Brewing Co. | Athens, GA

Previously in-planning as Kudzu Brewing, the team behind Athentic is gearing up to open their brewery in Athens, GA.  They’ve been very successful as homebrewers, taking home 5 medals in the 2018 Peach State Brew Off.  Athentic hosts occasional tastings to share their brews and they recently brewed a collaboration with Akademia Brewing that was available at the brewpub.

Awkward Brewing | Fayette County

The owners of Awkward Brewing are transplants from Washington state where they owned a small brewery before relocating.  With craft beer in their blood, and the passage of SB85, they feel now is the perfect time to open a brewery in Georgia.  They are currently on the search for a suitable location and hope to open in 2018 and foster a rich craft beer community in their area.

Beer Republic Brewing (Big Kettle Brewing & Ironshield Beer) | Lawrenceville, GA

A large, regional brewery is planned for Lawrenceville.  Beer Republic will be located at 394 North Clayton Street, not far from Slow Pour Brewing Co.  The location is 56,000 square feet and was the former Graphic Communications Corporation building.  Beer Republic will act as a parent company to Big Kettle Brewing and Ironshield Beer.  Big Kettle will offer contract brewing services to brewers throughout the Southeast, Ironshield Beer will produce house brand beers including classic European lagers and ales.  Owners David Rice and Glen Sprouse plan to open by the end of 2018.

By the Brewers Association definition, a Regional Brewery produces 15,000 – 6,000,000 barrels of beer per year.  Only a few breweries in Georgia currently produce over 15,000 barrels.

Target opening: By the end of 2018

Taking advantage of the new laws in Georgia, Halfway Crooks will sell 99% of their beer at the taproom with very limited distribution for festivals and special events.  Their brewing focus will be on barrel-aging, spontaneous brewing, saisons, and a variety of lower alcohol beers.
