Athens, GA brewpub to close November 18th

Copper Creek Brewing introduced many UGA students to craft beer and for many years was the only brewery in Downtown Athens.  Their popular beers include their American Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout, and Espresso Stout.  In recent years the brewpub has offered trendier styles such as Nebraska IPA, a “juicy, hazy, fruit-forward” beer. .

Fans on social media talked of first dates, their discovery of craft beer, and “Girl Scout Cookie” shooters at the brewpub.  In a Facebook post Copper Creek thanked the community and said, “The local craft beer community has grown exponentially since we first opened our doors, and it’s time for us to allow this new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to build on all of our successes.”

Athens now has three microbreweries (Creature Comforts, The Southern Brewing Co., Terrapin Beer Co.) as well as the recently opened Akademia brewpub.  Statewide there are currently 73 breweries and brewpubs with another four slated to open before the end of 2017, including the highly anticipated New Realm Brewing Co. headed by former Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele.

With restrictions on brewers eased by the passage of SB63 and SB85 we’re likely to see even more growth in the future.  As more breweries open and compete for tap handles and consumer loyalty, we’re likely to see more closures as well.  Gordon Biersch recently closed their Midtown Atlanta location and Strawn Brewing Company closed temporarily last year before opening under new ownership.
