Yellowhammer Huntsville
Yellowhammer Brewing was the first stop on our Huntsville beer trip.

A bittersweet episode this week.

The good news is that we got to connect with Keith Yager. Keith, the owner and brewmaster of Huntsville’s Yellowhammer Brewing, talked to us about their recent expansion, the growth of the Huntsville beer scene, and how he got his start brewing with an extract kit. Yellowhammer is one of the anchors of the Campus No. 805 development. Along with Salty Nut, Straight to Ale and others, the location has become a destination for beer lovers in the area.

We also remembered an Atlanta brewing icon.

The Atlanta beer community lost one of its most passionate and colorful members this week, Dan Rosen was involved in a tragic accident and passed away. Dan, along with his friend Hamp Covington, founded MAZURT Brewing.  They were very active in the homebrewing scene for many years and also guest brewed at local breweries to showcase their beers at special events and festivals.  When their elusive brews did show up they frequently won awards.  In Georgia at the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, Strong Beer Fest, and Classic City Brew Fest and also at Cigar City’s Hunahpu’s Day in Tampa, FL, where they served their coconut Russian Imperial Stout out of actual coconuts.

Dan was always smiling, always helpful, and always friendly.  He loved craft beer and the craft beer community.  He was your friend from the first time you met him.  He always remembered your face, but maybe not your name.  Dan mistook Brian Hewitt for Aaron and that never changed.  We mentioned a couple of times that he wasn’t Aaron, but that was usually several beers in to a bottle share or festival.  When Dan did meet Aaron at a brewery event he exclaimed, “Oh!  Another Aaron!”

Dan, thank you for all you did to make craft beer awesome.  We dedicate this episode of Beer Guys Radio to you.  You are, and will be, greatly missed.

Truck and Tap‘s Beers of the Week:

  • Red Brick’s Whale Shark Wheat. Which is not technically a “whale” beer….because it is a shark.
