Helm's Deep stout
Three Taverns Head Brewer Joran Van Ginderachter pulls a sample of their barrel-aged stout from a Sherry puncheon.

This weekend Three Taverns invited a handful of craft beer fans to preview their new 13% bourbon barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout, Helm’s Deep, at their brewery in Decatur, GA.  The beer will debut to the public at this year’s Wrecking Bar Strong Beer Fest, with a limited (~100) bottle release to be set at a later date.

Helm’s Deep was boiled for 24 hours to aid in caramelization of the malts and help give it a fuller body.  After primary fermentation it was aged for 8 months in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels.  It’s a very smooth stout initially, with a bourbon heat kick on the finish, roast and vanilla linger on the palate.  There’s also a sherry barrel variant (and a double barrel variant) that will be released in the future.  I enjoyed the sherry barrel version a bit more than the bourbon barrel version but I was in the minority, both beers are very good.

The Strong Beer Fest is sold out, so if you haven’t got a ticket make sure to get to the release to get your hands on this Stout.  We’ll share info on the release date as soon as we have it.
