SweetWater Happy Ending
SweetWater won’t be sending out any Happy Ending in 2016, you’ll just have to take care of that yourself. (2016 was released in late 2015) (Courtesy: SweetWater Brewing Co.)

Brewery confirms Happy Ending won’t be bottled in 2016

The brewery has confirmed to Beer Guys Radio the dirty internet rumors that Happy Ending Imperial Stout won’t be distributed this year. However, they did go on to say, “I definitely wouldn’t say it’s gone forever by any means.”  SweetWater recently opened their Hatchery, a 5-barrel pilot system that makes it possible to do smaller batches of beer, and they hinted that Happy Ending might (might!) be a candidate for one of those batches.

The brew has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.  Although the name has been around for a while folks really seemed to get fired up about it last year.  One Chicago retailer dropped the beer for what they called a “sexist, borderline racist” label.  Others were shocked/offended that they received samples from the brewery paired with a bottle of lotion.  SweetWater definitely wasn’t oblivious to the controversy, the label text makes that pretty clear: An impressive thick-headed specimen of an Imperial Stout… This stiffy is dry hopped to the rim… delivering a face full of 69 IBUs, resulting in an explosive finish.”  Oh, SweetWater, you so crazy.

But how is the beer?

Obviously not everyone appreciated the sophomoric humor of the name and the label.  But how is the beer?  It’s really good, I’m a fan and Untapped users give it a respectable 3.92 overall.  The price was hard to beat as well, with 22 oz. bombers averaging $4.99 – $5.99 around Atlanta.  Happy Ending also cellars quite nicely, I have several years worth stashed away.  It’s always good to keep a backup in case you go through a dry spell.

Did the name kill what was an otherwise great beer at a great price, or is that just a coincidence?  Who knows.  But, if you want to enjoy a big Imperial Stout for a happy ending to 2016 you’ll have to take your business to a different massage pa…. brewery.
