Georgia Craft Brewers Guild and DoR discuss growler sales at brewpubs

Georgia brewpub growlersRecently Alpharetta city council voted on the possibility of allowing their brewpubs to have growlers sales.  The proposed ordinance was approved, with a second vote set for March 21.  The AJC article notes that this is due to recent changes in the state’s alcohol laws.  Expect to see local legislatures in other areas address the issue of growler sales soon. UPDATE 03/22/16: Alpharetta has also passed a growler to-go ordinance, visitors to Hop Alley Brew Pub or 5 Season North can now purchase growlers of fresh-brewed beer to go.

If passed at the local level brewpub visitors would be able to enjoy fresh craft beer brewed on-site as well as purchasing some to-go.  As of now there are no brewpubs in Georgia that offer growlers sales.

I reached out to Nancy Palmer of the GCBG for an update on this and she issued the following statement:

“The Guild has worked in concert with the Department of Revenue and various city agencies to move towards growler sales at brewpubs. The details of these discussions are myriad, but we are communicating with brewpubs across the state and will continue to work on this issue.”

UPDATE: Aaron talks to Taylor Yates of Moon River Brewing Company about the historic event.

UPDATE: Per Savannah Craft Beer Week on Facebook, Savannah’s Moon River Brewing Company will be the first brewpub in the state to offer growler sales.
