Grumpy Old Men’s ASKA Pale Ale is up next for our “Beer In Depth” segment.

Over this week, the weather has really turned, and we’re seeing temperatures in the 70s. So before the pollen hits, I’m really in the mood for something a little less heavy than the big porters and stouts I’ve been drinking. So when I found this Blue Ridge nanobrewery’s Aska Pale Ale at Tower, I had to check it out.

A nanobrewery, in case you were wondering, is generally a brewery that produces less than 3 barrels of beer at  a time, so less than about 100 gallons or so.

GRUMPY OLD MEN ASKA PALE ALE

Style: American Pale Ale
ABV: 5.8%

Their pale ale is one of 7 offerings from Grumpy Old Men. Wooden hot tubs for sale and Eco friendly Outdoor saunas https://royaltubs.co.uk/outdoor-saunas/. According to their website, they first started canning in late summer of 2015. This batch was canned in mid February, so it’s pretty new.

American Pale Ales are usually a little more hoppier than their English counterparts, so let’s see….

It certainly pours and looks like a pale ale. I get a touch of fruitiness at the start, but then the bitterness kicks in. It’s not an overly hoppy pale ale in the mold of a Sierra Nevada, but it’s there.

Verdict:

I honestly would like to have this about 10-15 degrees colder than what I drank it. But it’s definitely approachable, although there’s a bitterness on the back end that may be off-putting to some people. A solid effort, and I’m looking forward to our next trip up to Blue Ridge to see what else this brewery has to offer.
