We took the show on the road this week. Since we are talking brewpubs, we headed to 5 Seasons Westside.

Two stalwarts from some of Atlanta’s most famous brewpubs joined us. Crawford Moran, founder of one of Atlanta’s first modern craft breweries (Dogwood Brewing Company). He now works with 5 Seasons, and also owns Decatur’s Slice and Pint.

John “JR” Roberts is the co-founder and brewmaster at Max Lager’s, as well as co-founder of White Oak Kitchen and Cocktails. Max Lager’s, of course, is Atlanta’s oldest brewpub in downtown Atlanta.

We spoke to the guys about the unique issues that brewpubs have to work with in Georgia. Thanks to the antiquated and non-business friendly laws in place, brewpubs like 5 Seasons and Max Lager’s are effectively handcuffed. For example, they are not allowed to give customers growlers to go. Moran and Roberts have their own….let’s say passionate…takes on this.

We also talk to them about their beers, including Moran’s love for Saisons, and the time that famous beer author Michael Jackson (no, not that one) visited Max Lagers…just after they opened!

5 Seasons Untappd
We think Crawford Moran is trying to make a statement with it, but we’re not really sure….

Truck and Tap‘s beers of the week? Aaron tried the 5 Seasons Nitro Stout. Tim had the “Can You Believe in the 21st Century In the United States of America That the State of Georgia Won’t Allow a Brewpub to Sell Beer To Go” IPA.

(And yes, that’s the name of the beer).

In other news, we talk about the Georgia winners of the Rate Beer 2015 awards; USA Today’s 10 Best lists, and our visit to Sweetwater to sample its Hash Session IPA.

Finally, we’ll giveaway an ATL Brew Box, Reformation tour passes and a beer bread mix from Boardwalk Food Company.

Next week, we’ll be talking to Hampton’s Jailhouse Brewing, as well as (hopefully) a special surprise from across the pond!
